Millions of dogs and cats, horses, livestock and birds now
carry the AVID® microchip. Wildlife and endangered species,
reptiles and even fish are being studied and managed with
the aid of this great technology.
Developed by a veterinarian, the AVID® microchip is safe,
permanent and takes only seconds to administer. The tiny injectable
"chip" contains a one-of-a-kind identification number
and is recognized worldwide.
AVID
pioneered the concept of "Pet Recovery". PETtracTM
is today the oldest and largest 24-hour pet recovery network
in the United States, with over 11 million animals registered.
Operators receive over 1000 calls every day.
Nearly all shelters and animal control officers have microchip
readers. They scan every animal that enters their facility.
Once a chip is identified, PETtrac's 800 number is called.
The operator searches the database for the chip number.
If the chip is registered, owner information is supplied
immediately to the shelter. The caller is also given alternate
contact info and even the pet's name!
Many animals are actually scanned when animal control officers
are out in the field. The chip number is phoned into PETtrac
by cell phone. If the pet is registered, the lost pet can
be returned to his owner without ever physically entering
the shelter.
