Camping With Pets: Enjoy the Outdoors While Keeping Everyone Safe and Happy

< All Topics

Camping is a favorite summertime tradition, and for many outdoor enthusiasts, the trip wouldn’t be complete without their beloved pets. According to the 2024 North American Camping Report by KOA (Kampgrounds of America), approximately 38% of campers say they travel with their pets, the majority of which are dogs. The trend has grown steadily over the last decade, driven by pet-friendly amenities at campgrounds, and a greater cultural emphasis on including pets in family adventures.

Camping With Pets

While bringing pets along enhances the experience, it also introduces new responsibilities and etiquette, especially when sharing space at the campground. Below are expert-recommended tips to help ensure that both your pet and your fellow campers have a safe and pleasant experience.

Plan Ahead: Make sure your pet is welcome and ready to camp

Long before you hit the road, it’s critical to make sure the campground you’re visiting is pet friendly. You should also understand if there are any breed, leash, or noise restrictions. Many public and private campgrounds will list their pet policies online or call the camp office.

Veterinarians advise campers to ensure pets are up to date on vaccinations, flea/tick prevention, and ID tags. It’s also a good idea to carry a copy of your pet’s medical records, just in case of emergencies.

Pack the essentials your pet will need, such as:

  • Food and bowls (include a collapsable bowl if you plan to take your dog hiking or on long walks)
  • Waste bags (always pick up after your dog)
  • Pet cleaning supplies – dog shampoo, paw wipes, etc.
  • Anti-anxiety medications or CBD treats if your pet gets nervous easily
  • Leash and harness (even if your dog does well off leash)
  • Pet-safe insect repellent and sunscreen
  • Familiar bedding or crate
  • Consider packable pet fencing for outdoor family time
  • Toys for distraction and comfort.

Campground Etiquette

  • Always Leash Your Pet: Most campgrounds require pets to be leashed, typically with a leash no longer than 6 feet. This helps prevent unwanted encounters with other pets and wildlife.
  • Limit Barking: Repetitive barking can quickly ruin the peace for neighbors. If your pet is reactive to unfamiliar environments or sounds, consider setting up a calming area in your tent or RV, or using anxiety-reducing aids like pheromone sprays or pressure wraps.
  • Respect Quiet Hours: Adhering to campground quiet hours includes controlling pet noise. Take your pet for an evening walk to tire them out before bedtime.
  • Pick Up After Your Pet: Always dispose of pet waste properly using designated pet waste stations or trash bins. Not doing so can spread disease and spoil the experience for everyone.
  • Always Supervise Your Pet: Even well-behaved pets can become unpredictable in new environments. Never leave them unattended, especially in a hot vehicle or tethered outside in extreme weather.

If a Neighbor’s Pet Becomes a Nuisance or Threat

Even when you’re a responsible pet owner, there can be times when neighbouring campers’ pets might create disturbances. This can be incessant barking, wandering into your campsite, or aggressive behaviour toward other pets, children and adults. Campground managers and groups like the American Camp Association recommend taking the following steps when encountering a neighbouring pet problem.

  • Document the issue: Keep notes or short videos of any repeated behavior, particularly if it involves aggression or noise violations.
  • Address issues politely: If you feel comfortable, approach the neighbor with a calm and non-confrontational tone. Sometimes, the owner may not be aware their pet is causing a problem.
  • Alert campground staff: If the issue persists or escalates, report it to the campground host or ranger. Most campgrounds have clear policies and may ask the disruptive party to leave if necessary.
  • Do not physically intervene: Never attempt to discipline or physically interact with another camper’s pet, especially if the animal appears aggressive.

Creating a Pet-positive Camp Culture

Camping with pets is a rewarding experience, but it requires proactive care and consideration. As interest in pet-inclusive travel grows, so does the need for shared responsibility. By following campground rules, practicing good pet etiquette, and calmly addressing issues when they arise, pet owners contribute to a safer, more enjoyable environment for everyone. After all, a peaceful campground where humans and pets coexist harmoniously is the best kind of wilderness retreat.
