How many Petland stores are there?

As of 2025, there are around 70 franchised Petland stores in the United States and around 20 corporately owned stores. There are more than 200 international franchised stores worldwide.

The first Petland opened its doors in Chillicothe, Ohio in 1967. Today, Petland owns and operates retail pet stores in Ohio, West Virgina, Kentucky and Indiana. Petland’s corporate office still calls Chillicothe home. 

The first franchised store opened in 1972, in the southern Ohio city of Portsmouth. Today, there are Petland franchised locations in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin. There are also Pet Centers in Connecticut and New Jersey.

Petland’s first international store opened in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1979. Now, there are Petland franchises in China, Mexico, Brazil, El Salvador, Saudi Arabia, Canada and South Africa.
