How Can We Help?
How the Human-Animal Bond Supports Heart Health
February is American Heart Month, a time to focus on the habits and connections that help keep our hearts healthy. While exercise, nutrition, and stress management are often top of mind, growing research shows another powerful influence on heart health: the human-animal bond.
According to studies from the American Heart Association (AHA), pets, especially dogs, can play a meaningful role in supporting cardiovascular well-being. A large meta-analysis published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes found that dog ownership was associated with a 24% lower risk of all-cause mortality and a 31% lower risk of death from heart attack or stroke, findings also reported by ScienceDaily.

The AHA has issued a Scientific Statement concluding that dog ownership is “probably associated” with reduced cardiovascular disease risk. While pets are not a replacement for medical care, experts emphasize that the benefits come through everyday lifestyle factors. Dogs, especially, encourage people to move more, follow daily routines, and spend time outdoors – habits known to support human and pet heart health.
Stress relief is another key factor. Chronic stress is linked to higher heart disease risk, and pets are powerful stress buffers. In a 2022 AHA survey, 95% of pet owners said they rely on their pet for stress relief, highlighting the emotional support pets provide. The AHA and CDC also note links between pet companionship and lower blood pressure, improved cholesterol, better blood sugar control, and increased physical activity.
For nearly 60 years, Petland has believed in the importance of the human-animal bond. By focusing on matching the right pet with the right person, Petland helps foster responsible, lasting relationships that support the well-being of both pets and people.
This Heart Health Month, science reinforces what pet families already know: the love, companionship, and routines shared with a pet can help support a healthier, happier heart.
