WINNIPEG — As sweltering summer temperatures set in, the Winnipeg Humane Society is reminding pet owners not to leave their furry friends in a hot car.

Temperatures inside a vehicle, even on cooler days, can get significantly warmer and put pets at risk of heat stroke, brain damage and even death.

“We need to do more for our pets when it comes to this issue,” said Kyle Jahns, WHS communications coordinator.

“To make a difference, people must be more aware of the intolerable conditions inside a hot vehicle and share this message with all Manitobans. Pets should not suffer over such an easily prevented issue.”

In 2017, the WHS received 324 complaints about animals locked in vehicles. In 2016, there were 185 calls and 226 calls in 2015.

The WHS is encouraging Manitobans to spread by messaging by placing “A Hot Car Can Still” decal on their vehicle window. The decals are available for a donation at the Winnipeg Humane Society, Petland, participating Pet Valu locations and River City Ford.

Anyone that sees an animal suffering inside a hot vehicle can call the WHS emergency line at (204) 982-2020. If the animal is parked in a public area, notify nearby businesses as they may be able to page the owner and quickly resolve the situation.
