How Can We Help?

July 4th Pet Safety

< All Topics

July 4th is one of our favorite times to come together, celebrate with friends and family and eat lots of food. For our pets, July 4th means loud fireworks, lots of people and food and summer heat. Although the fourth is a time for us to celebrate, it oftentimes mean stress for our pets. Before you head out for the festivities, keep these tips in mind for your four-legged best friend;

  • According to national statistics, there is a 30-60% increase in lost pets between July 4th and July 6th because of noisy fireworks.

    • Keep your pet at home during fireworks. Large crowds and loud noises can be frightening for a pet.
    • If you do bring your pet, make sure they have proper, up to date identification.
    • Consider anxiety relief remedies such as; thunder coat, calming CBD (Hempwell) or treats such as Heavenly Hounds. Your pets favorite blanket or toys can also help calm them during neighborhood fireworks.
  • No table scraps

    • Just because we can eat it, doesn’t mean our pet can. Especially keep pets away from coffee, alcohol, chocolate, onions, avocado, grapes and raisins.
    • During this time, there are lots of cookouts and we want our pets to participate too. Bring pet-friendly treats to the cookout such as Bowsers Dog Beer!
  • If it’s too hot for your feet, it’s too hot for their paws

    • Remember that pets paws can burn too, so watch for hot surfaces. Walk your pet at morning or evening time. Protective booties may be a good option for your pet and they may even come in Red, White and Blue!
  • Bugs be gone

    • Citronella and Insect repellents can be toxic to pets. Keep them out of reach and only treat your pets with products specifically designed for canine use. Summer is also a time when fleas and ticks are prevalent so make sure you are regularly treating your pet with preventative topicals or collars.
  • Stay hydrated!

    • July 4th is usually hot and humid outside. If your pet is celebrating America with you, make sure they are hydrated. Bring a collapsible water bowl and water bottle, ice cubes or freeze ice packs before you leave.

We hope you and your pets have a happy fourth!!
