Molly & Me: Cancer Survivor Celebrates With A Petland Puppy Companion
It was July of 2023 when Catlettsburg, Kentucky native, Susan Gabritsch received the news… she had stage one Breast Cancer. Like many, the then 57-year-old was diligent about her yearly mammograms and was shocked to receive the distressing diagnosis.
On that day, as Susan says, she knew she had a long road ahead, but she was determined to defeat cancer.
The next month, Susan went in for a single mastectomy where doctors removed the cancer. Then, Susan immediately began an aggressive form of HER2 chemotherapy at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland for the next four months. She lost her hair during that time, but that wasn’t going to stop her from enjoying life. Fast forward to today, and Susan is now cancer free!
In celebrating her victory over cancer, Susan recently did something she has always wanted to do – as far back as she can remember. She went on the search for her dream dog, a mini golden doodle.
“I have always wanted one. They are so fluffy and sweet.” Susan said. “I went online and searched for my local Petland in Ashland Kentucky). I knew from the moment I laid eyes on her that she was the one – and I just had to have her!”
You can easily say it was love at first sight for Susan and Molly. Susan took her home later that evening and they have been great companions ever since.
Susan says Molly has adjusted wonderfully to her new home and even likes wearing her little pink ribbons.
“It’s so comforting to come home to her every night. She is exploring her new surroundings and of all of the toys I have bought for her (and there are plenty), Molly’s favorite toy continues to be the Petland toy we brought home with her from day one.” Susan said.
“She is the perfect dog for me, and I absolutely have enjoyed loving her. She is my cancer beating celebration gift to myself!”
