New York Retail Pet Sale Ban Will Soon Limit Choice and Put New Yorkers at Risk When Seeking the Right Pet

< All Topics

CICERO, NY – Effective Saturday, November 30, 2024, Petland Cicero (New York), located at 5701 E. Circle Dr., Ste. 104, will close due to a retail pet sale ban passed by the New York State Legislature in late 2022. In December 2022, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the bill that forces pet shops to not sell puppies sourced from responsible, professional breeders who sell more than nine animals a year.

It is not unusual for individuals and families to seek out a specific breed of puppy or have a desire to raise the right pet for them from a young age. This is where Petland has been serving the pet care needs of this community and fostering the creation of strong human-animal bonds. “Petland Cicero has been matching the right pets with the right families for 20 years,” said Petland President and CEO Joe Watson. “Because of the misguided pet sale ban that has been forced on us by the State of New York, and lobbyists for a Washington DC-based radical animal rights activist group, we have no recourse but to close Petland Cicero next month. The closure of this highly regulated business will put caring and dedicated employees out of work and will severely limit pet choice for the people of New York. Over the past 20 years, Petland Cicero has contributed more than $10 million in payroll and payroll taxes to the local economy.”

Watson added, “Now, New Yorkers wishing to acquire a pet of their choice will be left with few options. Many will buy a puppy online, without the chance to meet the pet to determine if it is the right fit for them. Instead, their first meeting occurs when the pet is delivered to their front door. New Yorkers will also be at risk of being scammed by unscrupulous sellers who advertise online and are paid via an electronic transaction for a puppy that does not exist – then ‘ghosting’ the buyer, who has very little opportunity to recover their money.”

Petland Cicero is thankful for the opportunity to have spent 20 years introducing pets and families and meeting their pet care needs. We are extremely proud of the connections we have made in the community, and grateful for the thousands of local families who have trusted Petland to meet their pet and pet care needs.

Puppies will be available at Petland Cicero while supplies last. Pet supplies, food and other merchandise are now on sale at clearance prices. To learn more about Petland and its commitment to ethical breeding, visit petlandcharities.org.
