How Can We Help?

Now is the Time to Protect Your Pet Against Fleas, Ticks and More

< All Topics

CHILLICOTHE, OH – As temperatures rise and outdoor activity increases, so does the risk of finding fleas and ticks on our pets. Petland urges pet owners to act early this season by starting their pets’ flea and tick prevention before problems arise. Protecting against flea and tick encounters now can protect pets from future discomfort and potential health issues. Our veterinarians also want to remind pet owners to protect their pets from exposure to heartworm disease, which is transmitted by infected mosquitoes.

“Exposure to pests like mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks can lead to serious health complications for pets, including Heartworm, Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and more,” said Rebecca Atwood, DVM, Petland’s Chief of Veterinary Medicine. “Pet owners are encouraged to work with their veterinarian to stay ahead of the season by using trusted flea and tick prevention products, along with monthly heartworm prevention that could save an animal’s life.”

Veterinarians consistently recommend proven flea and tick prevention methods such as collars, topical treatments, sprays, and oral medications. These reliable and safe products can spare your pet from the itching, irritation, and diseases that fleas and ticks can carry. Heartworm is caused by a parasite that lives in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of infected pets. Prevention most often comes as a once-monthly tablet supplied by your veterinarian to protect the pet’s heart and lungs.

Along with flea, tick and heartworm prevention products, you can help your dog or cat avoid having contact with these pests and carriers by:

  1. Closely following preventive product instructions to ensure you’re using them properly.
  2. Limiting the amount of time your pet spends outdoors.
  3. Limiting contact with strays and wild animals.
  4. Bathing and brushing your pets regularly.
  5. Checking your pet for fleas and ticks regularly.
  6. If you find a flea on your pet or in your home, learn how to get rid of fleas right away to avoid further infestation.

While pet protection is the top priority, it’s also important to understand the broader implications of flea and tick infestations. Once these pests enter your home, they can be incredibly difficult to eliminate, even when using DIY or harsh chemical treatments. Early, effective prevention for every dog or cat in the home can eliminate in-home flea infestation.

Talk to your veterinarian about their recommended flea, tick, and heartworm prevention products. Our knowledgeable Petland pet counselors are also available to help you find the right solution for your pet.
