Be Ready: What to Know for the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season & How To Keep Your Pets Safe

As we saw last year, hurricanes aren’t just a coastal concern—they can wreak havoc far inland too. With the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season officially underway (June 1 through November 30), now is the time to prepare, plan, and stay informed. Whether you live along the coast or further inland, readiness is key for your family—and for your pets.

What to Expect This Season

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this year’s hurricane season is projected to be above average, fueled by warmer ocean temperatures and the presence of El Niño conditions.

Here’s what NOAA’s forecast predicts:

  • 13 to 19 named storms
  • 6 to 10 hurricanes
  • 3 to 5 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher)

Meteorologists estimate:

  • 60% chance of an above-normal season
  • 30% chance of a near-normal season
  • 10% chance of a below-normal season

Create a Family Emergency Kit—Including Your Pets

If an evacuation order is issued or conditions become unsafe, your family needs to be ready to leave quickly—and that includes being prepared to care for your pets during the disruption.

Here are the essentials Petland recommends including in your Pet-Friendly Emergency Kit:

Pet Essentials

  • Pet food and water (at least 3–5 days’ worth)
  • Food and water bowls
  • Leashes, collars, and harnesses
  • Pet carriers or crates (label with your contact info)
  • Comfort items (blanket, toy, or item that smells like home)
  • Waste disposal supplies (poop bags, litter, litter box)

Health & Safety

  • Copies of vaccination records and vet information
  • Medications your pet may need
  • Pet first aid kit
  • ID tags and microchip information

Important Documents

  • Printed copies of local shelter locations that accept pets
  • Petland’s Emergency Preparedness Tips (available in-store or in our resource guide)
  • Family emergency contact list

Having your supplies gathered ahead of time ensures you can act swiftly and calmly—keeping your family and pets safe.
