Pets Can Lower Human Risk Of Death From Heart Attack Or Stroke

< All Topics

CHILLICOTHE, OH (Feb. 9, 2026) — As Americans observe Heart Health Month this February, growing scientific evidence suggests that the human-animal bond, particularly with dogs, can play a meaningful role in supporting cardiovascular health.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. Research from the American Heart Association (AHA) and other health organizations shows that pet ownership and everyday lifestyle benefits may contribute to healthier hearts. A study published in the AHA journal, Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, found that dog ownership was associated with a 24% lower risk of all-cause death, and a 31% lower risk of death from heart attack or stroke.

The American Heart Association has also issued a formal Scientific Statement concluding that dog ownership is “probably associated with decreased cardiovascular disease risk.” While pets are not a substitute for medical care, the AHA notes they may support heart health indirectly by encouraging physical activity, reducing stress, and helping people maintain healthier daily routines.

According to the AHA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), regular interaction with pets, such as walking or playing, has been linked to lower blood pressure, improved cholesterol levels, better blood sugar control, and reduced stress in humans, all key factors in lowering heart attack and stroke risk. Stress relief is especially significant: in a 2022 AHA survey, 95% of pet owners said they rely on their pet for stress relief.

“At Petland, we’ve always believed in the power of the human-animal bond,” said Joe Watson, Petland President & CEO. “As Heart Health Month reminds us to care for our hearts, science continues to affirm that pets, especially dogs, can help people live healthier, more connected lives.”

For nearly 60 years, Petland has recognized the value of the human-animal bond and has been dedicated to matching the right pet with the right person, helping ensure the needs of both are met.
