Protect Your Pet from Your Yard’s Hidden Risks

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (April 28, 2026) – As warmer weather arrives and households begin spring cleaning indoors and out, Petland urges pet owners to take extra precautions to protect their animals from seasonal hazards. Veterinary experts caution that common cleaning and planting practices can expose pets to toxic plants, lawn chemicals, and unsafe outdoor environments.

Popular spring plants – such as lilies, tulips, daffodils, and azaleas – pose serious health risks to pets if ingested. According to veterinarians and animal poison control experts, plant toxicity remains one of the most frequent causes of pet poisoning during the spring season. Symptoms can range from mild stomach issues to severe organ damage.

In addition, fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides used in lawn care can be harmful to pets who touch freshly treated areas. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) advises keeping animals away from chemical applications until surfaces are completely dry and safe, typically 24–72 hours after treatment.

Creating a safe outdoor space for your pet is critical. If possible, pet owners should designate chemical-free areas for play and toileting, ensure access to shade and fresh water, and supervise pets to prevent exposure to hazardous plants or substances.

“Pet owners should be alert for signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drooling, lethargy, difficulty breathing, or skin irritation,” said Sarah Hettinger, DVM, Petland veterinarian. “If you notice any of these symptoms after your pet has been outdoors or exposed to plants or chemicals, contact your veterinarian or a poison control center immediately. Early intervention can make a significant difference.”
