Spring Travel With Pets: Tips For A Safe And Stress-Free Road Trip
CHILLICOTHE, OH (March 23, 2026) – With spring upon us, families will be hitting the road – with their pets – for spring holidays and summer road trips. Including pets in our travel plans can be rewarding and is becoming much more common. However, preparation is key to ensure a safe, comfortable journey for the entire family.
Experts recommend scheduling a pre-trip veterinary visit to address your pet’s health needs, such as motion sickness or anxiety. Consult your veterinarian about appropriate medications and test them in advance to avoid adverse reactions. This visit is also a good time to ensure your pet has proper identification prior to travel.
If you plan to take your pet across state lines, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) requires a valid USDA APHIS Form 7001, completed by your veterinarian. This form certifies your pet’s health and ensures compliance with interstate travel regulations.
“Traveling with pets can be a wonderful bonding experience when done thoughtfully,” said Dr. Sarah Hettinger, Petland veterinarian. “A pre-trip veterinary check-up and the right travel paperwork help ensure your pet is healthy, comfortable, and ready for the adventure ahead.”
Safety in the car is essential. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recommends pets be secured in a crate or harness attached to a seatbelt to prevent injury. The American Kennel Club (AKC) adds that proper restraints reduce driver distraction and protect pets during sudden stops or accidents.
Pet owners should also prepare for accommodations at their destination, and along the way. Confirm hotel pet policies in advance and limit the time your pet is left alone in rooms. Bring familiar bedding to reduce stress and help pets adjust to new environments.
Pet Travel Checklist:
- Food, water and bowls
- Crate or safety harness; seat belt adapter; leash; collar; and ID tags
- Medical records, medications and emergency veterinary contact information
- Waste bags and cleaning supplies
- Favorite toys and bedding
The American Red Cross and CDC both emphasize packing a pet travel kit and planning frequent stops for hydration, exercise and bathroom breaks to keep pets healthy on the road. With proper planning, pet-inclusive road trips can be safe, enjoyable and memorable for the entire family.
