Warmer Weather Brings Higher Risk Of Fleas And Ticks For Pets, Petland Veterinarians Warn
CHILLICOTHE, OH (March 12, 2026) – As temperatures rise and pets spend more time outdoors, flea and tick activity increases, putting dogs and cats at higher risk of irritation, infection, and disease. Petland veterinarians remind pet owners that preventive care is essential to protect pets’ health and comfort during warmer months.
Fleas and ticks are more than just a nuisance. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), these external parasites feed on blood and can transmit disease to animals and people. They can also cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, and other health issues in pets if left untreated.
“Flea and tick prevention is one of the simplest ways pet owners can protect their pets from discomfort and potentially serious disease,” said Sarah Hettinger, DVM, Petland veterinarian. “When pets are protected, they’re more comfortable, more active, and able to enjoy a higher quality of life year-round.”
Animal experts say prevention is particularly important during spring and summer when flea and tick populations peak. The American Kennel Club notes that it’s nearly impossible for pets that spend time outdoors to completely avoid exposure without proper protection.
Veterinarians recommend the following steps to help keep pests at bay:
- Use veterinarian-recommended flea and tick preventives at the discretion of your pet’s doctor. (American Kennel Club)
- Check pets daily for ticks, especially after walks or outdoor play in grassy or wooded areas. (CDC)
- Maintain a clean home and yard, including regular vacuuming and mowing the lawn to reduce parasite habitats. (US EPA)
- Consult a veterinarian to choose the safest and most effective prevention plan for your pet’s age, health, and lifestyle.
By taking proactive steps and working with a veterinarian, pet owners can significantly reduce the risk of flea and tick infestations to help ensure your pets stay healthy, happy, and itch-free throughout the warmer seasons.
