Petland Applauds the Introduction of the Canine Care Certified Program
Purdue University releases science-based research on canine standards of care program
(Chillicothe, OH, August 5, 2016) – For nearly 50-years, Petland has taken very seriously the welfare of companion animals raised for our customers. We are pleased that after a multi-year pilot test project with voluntary participation by more than a dozen professional dog breeders, Dr. Candace Croney, director of Purdue University's Center for Animal Welfare Science, and her team have developed comprehensive canine welfare standards that are science-based and focus on both the physical and behavioral well-being of dogs and puppies.
The result ofthat research is this week’s introduction of the Canine Care Certified program; the first of its kind in the nation. The program establishes rigorous standards of care to be followed by professional dog breeders and is combined with regular, third-party, independent audits of breeder operations.
"This is a program with expansive reach, deep substance, and pilot testing to ensure it works. We took a hard, thorough look at public expectations, the relationship of breeders with their dogs and what those mean for dogs' long-term physical and behavioral health," said Dr. Croney.
"We congratulate Dr. Croney and her team of nationally renowned animal scientists, who dedicate their lives to bringing improvements to the animal world," said Joe Watson, president and CEO of Petland, Inc. "We thank the professional dog breeding community, which voluntarily embraced the development of this science-based standards program project. We must always continue to improve the care of all pets at every stage of their lives."
