Petland restricts sale of large constricting snakes

Change reflects company's mission to provide the right pets that can be cared for at highest level

(Chillicothe, Ohio, March 16, 2015) – Petland recently announced it will no longer offer for sale constricting snakes larger than Ball Pythons (Python regius), Corn snakes (Pantherophis guttatus), Milk snakes (Lampropeltis Triangulum), and King snakes (Lampropeltis sp).

“We certainly understand and appreciate those that are able to provide the level of care that largersnakes require," said Petland’s Director of Animal Welfare Brian Winslow. “But in order to fulfill our mission, Petland will only be offering non-venomous species of snakes that do not exceed the adult size of the above-listed species.”

Petland’s Mission Statement emphasizes: “Our pet counselors are dedicated to matching the right pet to the right customer and meeting the needs of both”.

While certain animals can make great pets, some have very specific and challenging long-term care requirements which extend beyond Petland's current business model.

“Petland’s niche in the marketplace has always been our steadfast focus on our pets. While Petland respects and promotes responsible pet choice, we must always balance that right with our business model's ability to support the needs of such pets throughout the pet’s life," said President and CEO Joe Watson.

Petland’s commitment to responsible pet ownership began in 1967 in Chillicothe, Ohio when founder Ed Kunzelman, a local history teacher, decided there was a better way to offer pets and pet supplies to the community.
